LYNN HERRICK SHARP AWARD EXHIBITION

In a joint venture with the University of Delaware, The Delaware Contemporary is pleased to present the Lynn Herrick Sharp Award Exhibition. This award is presented to an art major in the final stages of pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in the Department of Art and Design. During the student's junior year, portfolios are submitted to the fine art faculty. The faculty then selects one award winner and honorable mentions to exhibit their work publicly and receive a financial award. The 2019-20 Lynn Herrick Sharp Award winner is Sierra Bacon, with honorable mention going to John Halligan.

In her experimental and provocative multi-channel videos, Sierra Bacon utilizes the expressive qualities of the moving image to present work that embodies topics of inequity and challenges gender stereotypes. The backbone of her work is derived from real stories told through interviews with women. Sierra builds her original spoken word narration from this source material which, alongside her colorful, visual constructions, act as a call to action in addressing gender bias. 

Sculptor John Halligan primarily works with wood, carving human limbs from fallen logs and tree stumps. His installations draw attention to movement and gesture by positioning sculptural forms in relation to each other.  

Lynn Herrick Sharp is a long-time supporter of The Delaware Contemporary, having served as Secretary of the Board of Directors from 2002 to 2008. She is recognized as an Emeritus Board Member for her contributions to The Delaware Contemporary and for championing contemporary art in the region.

This exhibition is coordinated by Sam Whalen, the University of Delaware Curatorial Fellow.
