Featuring the work of Philadelphia-based artists Hanna Vogel, Monroe Isenberg and Mike Benevenia, Round About: Reconsidering the Object in Space presents perceptions and layers of experience that inform and expand our notions of sculpture. Employing different and non-traditional approaches, these three multi-media artists guide viewers to deepen their personal connection as well as emotional and intellectual associations with the media.

For centuries, artists have relentlessly pushed against traditional values of making and presenting objects, asking themselves and the viewer to reconsider expectations of volume and mass, the interplay between hollows and protrusions, and the balance of planes and contours. Vogel, Isenberg and Benevenia share a collective interest in organic materials that draw attention to the artworks’ physical attributes and engage the audience in reflection on our relationship to the natural and built world.

Hanna Vogel’s choice of porcelain articulates the physical fragility of the built environment to the same degree that Monroe Isenberg’s uprooted tree and its humbling scale beckons a reciprocity. Michael Benevenia’s anthropologically intended interest in discarded treasures questions nostalgia versus value. Each artwork is concerned with the conditions in which art and meaning are made and circulated, turning them to their own advantage, or sometimes ignoring or disrupting them.
