East City Art Reviews: We the People, For Show or For Sure: Chawky Frenn 2010-2020
By Claudia Rousseau, Ph.D. on December 8, 2020
An unusual and timely exhibit of works by Virginia-based artist Chawky Frenn is on view at the Delaware Contemporary Art Museum in Wilmington, DE. It features a series of forty-seven mixed media paintings, selected by curator Kathrine Page from one hundred seven images made on posters of the United States Constitution. Each is accompanied by a text selected by the artist that is quoted from one of a diverse group of political and religious leaders, including a list of presidents going back to Lincoln, economists, justices, writers, civil rights activists and others.

Art Live: Holiday Shows
By Constance McBride
Now that the election is over, there’s room to begin thinking about the holidays. Yes, the pandemic is still looming large and we may not be planning for large gatherings, but let’s not forego the timeless tradition of gift giving. This year both live and virtual shows and sales can be found around our area.

Another live event worth checking out is “Kernel/Seed/Nut/Spore”, a solo exhibition of works by Ruth Ansel, on view at The Delaware Contemporary (TDC) in the Elizabeth Denison Hatch Gallery through November 29th. Ansel, one of TDC’s studio artists, has been devoted to exploring the medium of egg tempera painting for nearly forty years. For more details on all events at TDC visit TDC.

Whatever you do this week, support the arts!!

The Art of Chawky Frenn
By F. Lennox Campello
There are artists to whom the creation of art is a very personal thing, often decipherable only to the artist. There are also artists who create art to cause a public reaction – this is often where the gimmick masters tend to flourish. There are artists who experiment, try, test and explore and spend decades recreating themselves…

And there are artists, such as Chawky Frenn, to whom art is a harsh mistress who gives pleasure through both a brutal ability to record the dark footprint of the evil side of mankind, as well as the inherent beauty of the human race.

The Delaware Contemporary presents Theresa Chromati, Ellen Priest, and Cheryl WarrickReturn to contemporary art
By Gail Obenreder
There’s plenty to see at the just-reopened Delaware Contemporary. The galleries inside this former railroad car assembly plant have been joined by the outdoor Platform Gallery, created to raise the profile of contemporary art in the community and engage in civic dialogue. The shows now on view are well worth visiting, for those who can do so safely.

This Museum Is Finding an Ingenious Way to Open an Exhibition During Lockdown
By Camille Okhio
With social-distancing measures still largely in place, art and design institutions have rushed headfirst onto the web. In the weeks directly following the country’s first coronavirus lockdowns, galleries pushed their online viewing rooms and archives…

But recently, one artist (and museum) figured out how to traverse both digital and physical spaces safely, in order to make sure that a previously scheduled exhibition was able to go forward. Delaware Contemporary, a modest artist-founded institution in Wilmington, is moving forward with its first show since the museum was remodeled. “Stepping Out to Step In” is set to be unveiled tomorrow with works by artist Theresa Chromati. The catch? It’s now completely staged outdoors.

Stepping Out to Step In: Theresa Chromati’s Commission at The Delaware Contemporary Words: Kristen Hileman
In the early fall of 2019, Leslie Shaffer, the newly appointed Executive Director at The Delaware Contemporary, asked me to work with the 40-year-old arts organization as a curator-in-residence. I had known Shaffer from her time at Baltimore’s Contemporary where she served as first Director of Education and then Interim Executive Director in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was exciting to hear her talk about her vision for activating the exterior of TDC’s building, a former railroad car assembly plant in Wilmington’s evolving Riverfront neighborhood.

This fall will be nothing short of visionary at The Delaware Contemporary. Their first get of the season? Critical darling Peter Wayne Lewis, the internationally coveted Jamaican-born painter who has spent the past 10 years making his abstract art out of a studio in Beijing’s renowned artists’ district. The large-scale abstractions that color “Beijing Booster Paintings” are a cultural revolution: see influences of African American expressionists, Japanese sumi ink paintings, Chinese calligraphy and traditional American painting. Starting Oct. 4, you might want a passport for this one. On Nov. 9, get savvy with SABA V and score unique pieces small-batch style at the Small Art Buying Adventure. But wait: This year, during the patron preview, the order in which you bought your ticket gives you a better draft choice, so to speak—first to buy your ticket, first to score the art and so on. But don’t worry, the general admission portion of the program will resume the traditional elbow-knocking, art-grabbing frenzy of years past. At $25 a pop, the anonymous-until-sold 6x6 inch treasures are a steal. Tickets on sale now.

Delaware Contemporary is celebrating its 40th anniversary with “Origins,” an exhibition featuring work by two sculptors: founder, Rick Rothrock, and long-time supporter, Stan Smokler. The reception was last week, but this exhibition will be up through April 21st.  Rothrocks’ smooth stone sculptures, steeped in inspiration pulled from nature, (waves, animal metamorphoses etc.) gently compliment Smokler’s stark and resolute, abstract steel sculptures. Smokler often gives new life to found objects, purposefully turning them on their head and creating a unique purpose and perspective on the once mundane. Stop by check out this exhibition this winter and congratulation Delaware Contemporary for its’ impact on the arts in Wilmington.

January 10, 2019, by Jill Althouse-Wood

Rick Rothrock and Stan Smokler are two names that carry all the alliteration and swagger of DC or Marvel alter egos. The comparison is fitting; in the Delaware art world, Rothrock and Smokler are the superheroes. When The Delaware Contemporary wanted to launch their 40thanniversary year in 2019, they called on the two sculptors to kick off the year’s celebration with a joint exhibition. I choose to believe that the call came by way of a beamed signal, a lighted helix perhaps, corkscrewing into the night sky. If you’ve seen the work of these two men, Smokler, with his witty sense of play, and Rothrock, with his attunement to light and season, I think they would smile at that thought.
