“Somewhere in a deep dark wood worms writhe and wriggle, wresting food from fallen leaves and felled trees. Insects and furry animals inhabit the loam, feeding on the worms that feed on the earth. Birds and large lumbering beasts peck at these ground dwellers to fill their stomachs. After eons slowly aging, dying, and lying in place on the forest floor folded in fronds of fungus, their bodies cover with the next Fall’s leaves and needles, starting the process over again. Somewhere in a deep dark wood worms writhe and wriggle, wresting food from fallen leaves and felled trees...”

Over millenia mountains disintegrate downstream to sand, finer silt, and dense clay. When they mix with composting organic matter it becomes loam. Loam is as much a process as it is a material. The artists in this exhibit share this “loamy” process, mixing solid external experiences with flowing internal meaning. The loam itself represents fertile grounds for creative inspiration and a solid foundation on which to build their visual language. The materials they use are in various states of decay, whether wood suspended in the process of decomposition, or earthen pigments drawn from mountain mines and plant powders. Human connection, attention, and reverence is present in these depictions of natural processes.
