As we physically move through life, our mind tracks our experiences, transforming them into emotions. The conscious mind controls our everyday existence, while our subconscious passively absorbs and records memories. Although a universal human trait, this psychological function harbors many mysteries that are utterly individual.

Mickayel Thurin employs a variety of mediums to create personal portraits, of both herself and her loved ones, to reveal the inner workings of the subconscious. Inspiration is derived from dreams, meditation, therapy, and introspection. Accessing these spaces of thought and reflection produces portraits that are clearly figurative, but vibrate with surrealistic color and texture. Her mediums range from paint and embroidery to glitter and recycled fabrics; choices that reflect the complex inner weavings of the mind. Each work delves into personal experiences through these unique combinations of materials, arriving at an intersection of bright color, contrasting textures, and evocative text. Thurin’s masterful layering of materials captures the conceptual chaos while composing a distinctive aesthetic.

The resulting portraits convey a variety of abstracted notions, and while each presents Thurin’s individual contemplations, they beautifully evoke a semblance of universal human emotion. Each work invites viewers to resonate with the portraits as an avenue of expression for themselves. An escape into our own emotional landscapes by way of Thurin’s thoughtful process and dreamlike portrayals.
