WHAT DOES THE DELAWARE CONTEMPORARY MEAN TO YOU?

Transcendence, Collaboration, Access

THE DELAWARE CONTEMPORARY has had a very significant impact in my life by greatly increasing my self-esteem, confidence, and public speaking skills. I have developed a love and understanding of the fine arts that I didn't have before.

The Delaware Contemporary plants seeds of change in the visitors and staff, inspiring them to branch out into the world to create new growth. We grow as we enter in and we share new growth as we exit. That is the beauty of art.

Diverse, Refreshing, Alive

I initially became involved with THE DELAWARE CONTEMPORARY through the Creative Arts Club program with Delcastle High School. I've since graduated but the program, atmosphere, experience, and people left such a lasting impression on me that I keep coming back.

The Delaware Contemporary has become my artistic home away from home, sparking my creative nature, and teaching me so much through meeting great artists and seeing beautiful installations. One of my favorite memories is a conversation between me and exhibiting artist, Mrs. Seong at an Art Loop. I never fully understood her work but was drawn to it. We talked about her life, perspective, and motivations which really wowed me because it was all very unique and different to me. I truly enjoyed getting to know her and will continue to be inspired by her story. It was actually one of the reasons I set out to learn how to paint.

Welcoming, Inspiring, Home

I discovered THE DELAWARE CONTEMPORARY as I was searching for a place to meet other people who liked to do creative things. It became the first place I made new friends when I moved to Delaware. This space, and these people, make me feel at home surrounded by other people who can’t help themselves but to create.

I love that there is always something new to marvel at that spurs my imagination.  Nothing is static.

Aspiring, Resourceful, Adventurous

It's been ten months since I took on the role of Executive Director of THE DELAWARE CONTEMPORARY and I can say without hesitation that it was a great decision. I have been warmly welcomed by Wilmington's arts leaders and cultural community. My staff and board of directors are talented and utterly devoted to the organization and our mission to connect creativity, contemporary art, and people for good across our community. I am proud to be here, proud of what we do, and proud to be with the Delaware, Greater Wilmington, and Brandywine Valley communities we serve.

Things that inspire me about our wonderful museum are:

- The 80+ high school students in our after school Art Clubs furthering their own creative and personal growth, on their own time.

- The 24 studio artists, each with a distinct creative voice, toiling away at their art, striving to show us something unique about ourselves and the world we share together.

- The families, friends, and supporters that come out to support local artists during their exhibition openings, artists talks, and panel discussions.

- The diverse range of college art students from Delaware College of Art and Design, University of Delaware, Cecil College, Salem Community College and others that gain experience and professional development.

- The creative partnerships with organizations who are all working hard to to enrich the quality of life for all through art and creative expression.

- And of course, the excellent artists, and exhibitions we showcase year round for the public to experience.

I will continue to direct The Delaware Contemporary in stewarding artistic and programmatic excellence as a creative social connector for our diverse community with conscientious leadership and financial management to ensure success as we approach our 40th anniversary.
